Starting Sunday, July 9, 2023, The South Texas Ecotourism Center [STEC], will commence its Kids Summer Program. The program will take place weekly, on Sundays, from 2-3 p.m. until Aug. 27. A total of 27 different topics will be touched on in this program. There is a 5$ fee for each class.

The program will be headed by STEC Educator and Ecosystem Specialist Shannon McGinley-White with the help of volunteers of STEC.

“I will be leading it and I will be in charge of the class. We might have a volunteer help out if it gets busy enough, but mostly it will be just me,” explained McGinley-White, who has been working with STEC since December, 2022.

STEC recently wrapped up its summer camp, which ended in June, 2023, but McGinley-White wanted to keep the family-friendly educational activities going in order to benefit local youth. She came up with the Kids Summer Program with the assistance of STEC Director Edward Meza. Their goal is to provide an educational and fun activity for youth, giving kids a chance to learn about nature and science, as well as bring a fun craft home, to make the summertime more “memorable”, according to McGinley-White.

On July 9, kids participating in the program will make slime from native plants during the program titled “Slime Time”.

On July 16, they will work with natural dyes made from vegetables during Natural Ways to Dye.

On July 30, they will make their own bottle ecosystems during Small World.

On Aug. 6, they will be dissecting owl pellets and identifying their contents during Good Eats.

On Aug. 13, they will be creating sun-printed art during Sun Day.

On Aug. 27, they will be making art from recycled or upcycled items during Just Like New.

Since the program is only an hour long each Sunday, it is recommended that parents and guardians stick around during the duration of the day’s class.

“They can tour the facility. There is a lot to do here,” said McGinley-White.
