SPIBNCAS hosts ‘Kid’s Wildlife Fridays’

Special to the PRESS

The South Padre Island Birding, Nature Center and Alligator Sanctuary [SPIBNCAS] is inviting children to attend one, or all the four, sessions of the Kid’s Wildlife Fridays program, happening Fridays through July and into the first week of August. Each program will present a facet of nature found along the shores of the Lower Laguna Madre through both indoor and outdoor instruction and activities.

On Friday, July 14, participants will enjoy a nice and easy morning birding tour on the SPIBNCAS boardwalk through stunning tidal wetlands as well as a freshwater oasis with naturalist educators as their guide. The tour will focus on surveying the colonial waterbirds found in the park and enjoying the many young baby birds learning to navigate life on the wetlands. Child binoculars will be loaned for the tour.

The July 21 program will be all about pollinators. Pollinators are vital to ecosystem functions which makes learning about them and how to take care of them extremely important, according to SPIBNCAS. This program will teach about the special relationships between plants and pollinators and what species inhabit SPIBNCAS gardens through outdoor exploration and discovery. Children will also have indoor instruction and work on a pollinator and flower match-up craft.

On July 28, participants will have a great opportunity to deepen their understanding and appreciation for the mammals found in the Lower Laguna Madre region. Throughout the program, naturalist educators will guide children in discovering the tracks and signs that mammals leave behind, and teach them how to identify different species based on their unique characteristics. In addition, children will also engage in fun, hands-on activities like mammal track plastering and sketching that will help them connect with these creatures on a personal level, according to SPIBNCAS.
