Port Isabel Early College High School [PIECHS] will be hosting their annual “The Future Tarpon Football Camp” on Wednesday, July 26 and Thursday, July 27. The two-day event will take place at the PIECHS football field and will run from 8-11 a.m. The free football camp is for students age five and up, to incoming freshmen.
The camp will be run by the PIECHS coaching staff who just came back from the THSCA Coaching Conference held in Houston, Tx. They will be teaching the participants the basic fundamentals of football. Offensively, the young Tarpons take turns receiving handoffs and running the ball. Then they run routes as receivers as they go for a pass. The older linemen will be separated as they work on stances and blocking techniques. Defensively, the young linebackers and secondary players are taught defensive skills such as how to back pedal and make adjustments to the incoming ball. The camp also covers the third phase of the game, the special teams. They run drills such as punting and kicking the ball to simulate a kickoff or field goal try.
