Purple Sage puts on a show

By R. Lewis

Early last week, we were treated to a magnificent “Purple Sage Bloom”.  That is when the Native Texas Sage, aka “Cenizo”, puts on a show of flowers that color our landscapes a beautiful purple.  Driving into Port Isabel last Monday morning, July 17, visitors were treated to a colorful show of the Texas Sage plants that were in full bloom.

This happens here frequently, but sometimes the bloom is heavier and more intense.

The Texas Sage and also a hybrid Green Sage often bloom when they sense a change in barometric pressure in the atmosphere.  Fifteen years ago, many of us remember a similar bloom, but even more prolific, as Hurricane Dolly approached our area of the coast.

I remember that as being such an ominous warning that the weather is about to make a change for the worse, which is exactly what happened.  One of the other names that the Texas Sage is referred to is “The Barometer Plant”.
