This past week, on Friday, July 28, 2023, a small group of Port Isabel summer track athletes competed in the Texas Amateur Athletic Federation (TAAF) 2023 Summer Games of Texas. The annual three-day event is hosted by a select group of cities, and this year, the City of Brownsville had the privilege of being the hosting venue. Although the TAAF Summer Games of Texas had thousands of athletes competing in 12 different sports, the Port Isabel [PI] athletes only competed in the Track & Field State Meet which was held at Veterans Memorial Early College High School.
On day one, Elle Wall competed in the Girls 14 & Under (14u) High Jump event and had a jump of 4’-10”. The height was the maximum height recorded for her age group and she was awarded the gold medal in the event. JaDore Gillings and Sophia Lopez, whom recorded the same height, also received a gold medal. On day two, Wall competed in two running events. She ran the 100 Meter Dash in 13.84 seconds finishing 22 out of 32 runners in the prelims. She then ran the 200 Meter Dash in 27.95 seconds, finishing 16 out of 37 in the prelims.
In other running events, Dustin Mock, who competed in the Eight & Under Division came in eighth place in the 50 Meter Dash Finals with a time of 8.31 seconds. Mock also came in 14 out of 36 in the 200 Meter Dash Prelims with a time of 33.68 seconds. Anwar Farooqui finished 18 out of 23 in the (8u) 800 Meter Run with a time of 3:31.76. Christian Garcia ran the (16u) 300 Meter Hurdles and finished 15 out of 21 in the prelims with a time of 47.10 seconds. Emily Ramos ran in the (18u) 300 Meter Hurdles and finished 15 out of 19 in the prelims with a time of 52.69 seconds.
