American Legion News: Journey to success has begun

By CONNIE THOMAS

As newly elected District President, my journey has begun. Membership cards, given to me at the state convention in Austin this past July, are to be delivered in person. I have had the opportunity to visit four of the nine units under my jurisdiction here in the RGV. My home, Unit 498 here in Port Isabel, I of course visit and work with frequently. I still have four more units to visit.

My first stop was Post 93 in Mission, TX. They have graciously offered to host our Fall District Convention. The date is still pending, but should be the second or third weekend in October. It is a beautiful facility with two large meeting rooms. At this convention we will report on what each unit’s plans are to help our individual local communities, and what National Veteran Programs they have selected their fundraising event to go towards. It is always interesting to learn what fun events these volunteers come up with to raise monies.

My next stops were McAllen Unit 37. I am most familiar with this family of volunteers as I used to live in the McAllen area when I first moved to the valley forty years ago. They are a fun close knit group that does much for their community. Their officers are also my mentors as they have served on all levels from individual unit to district to division and one member served State President from 2021-2022.

Unit 172 in Mercedes is a small post, like our Port Isabel unit, but they are big on volunteering. This group of ladies rarely miss a convention; there are six a year. They too have served on many levels of positions for the State of Texas. A friendly happy lot, I always feel inspired and am reminded why we enjoy being involved in the Auxiliary.

Last Saturday I visited Unit 408 in Edinburg, Texas. The officers and volunteers at this Unit have reached out to District to help resolve some issues that commonly arise when new members join and need understanding of how things work. This is where District 15 officers work together to help the struggling units. Still, it is plain to see their efforts and their devotion. They are reminded we are all just volunteers.
