This past Saturday, Aug. 5, the Port Isabel Tarpons held their “Blue & White” scrimmage game at Tarpon Stadium. It was the first ‘real’ action the team got to engage in as it pitted the offense versus the defense in a pseudo-game matchup.
The first-string offense started play on their own 20-yard line. The first play netted about ten yards and it could’ve have gone for more had the coaches not whistled the play over. The defense did step it up after that, but the ball was moved about ten yards regardless of the yards gained by the runner. Six plays later, the offense ran it in for the score and the extra point kick was successful.
The offense struggled in their second drive as they fumbled the snap and then threw an incompletion. After a five-yard run, the next rusher gained about ten yards before the whistle was blown. They then proceed to do another extra point kick which was good as it split the goalpost. Second string running backs Dylan Green and Jose “JoJo” Ochoa worked with the first group and both were credited with a score.
The second-string offensive took over on the third series. They were able to drive down the field and score as well. The Tarpons will have a new kicker this new season and so far, he has been doing well.
