Hibiscus blooms with love

By. R LEWIS

I am more than happy to welcome the beginning of the fall season officially starting Saturday, Sept. 23.
This morning Sunday, Sept. 17, I enjoyed a couple hours of outdoor time with some scattered showers and temperatures in the mid 70’s, making it the start of a wonderful day.

Also, a look at our long-range weather forecast shows that it will continue to stay hot with temperatures in the 90’s. However, now, temperatures are only reaching the lower 90-degree mark daily.

Looking out the window after the light rain we had, it was nice to see the parched foliage of plants that have suffered sun scalding, invasion of spider mites and the never-ending dust, finally washed off.

We all have survived another hot south Texas summer and are ready to celebrate the arrival of the fall season.

With the gradual lowering of our daily temperatures, we will  notice that our plants are beginning to look better and will even notice new flushes of growth on trees and shrubs.  Now, as your plants emerge from the “survival mode” of late summer, it is so important to feed them.  I am always going to suggest organic plant foods, but feed your plants now regardless of what it is. They need it.

We are now on Stage Three Water Restriction, but that’s no reason to not water your plants with your hand-held garden hose on allotted days, especially with our extreme daily heat on a steady “degree by degree” decline.

Keep your plants fed and watered properly and they will reward you with a healthier appearance and an abundance of new blooms to welcome the birds and butterflies that are beginning their southward fall migration.  Let’s greet them with healthy blooming gardens to make their brief visits with us memorable. Hopefully, they will return to our gardens next spring on their return trip home.
