Ashore on Padre Island
The schooner Delaware, loaded with coal for the navy, on the 6th instant, parted both chains and went ashore on Padre Island – vessel and cargo a total loss. (This was originally published in the Somerset Herald and Farmers’ and Mechanics’ Register on Tuesday, Sept. 1, 1846.)
I missed getting my haircut this morning…
And then I remembered. This was the day the town had agreed to drop everything-and I mean everything- and collect scrap for Uncle Sam.
Yes sir, the drugstore, the corner garage, Sam Abernathy’s general store – every place in town except the post office…closed up tight today from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
You ought to see the result piled up in front of the fire house. One hundred and fifty tons of metal that had been lying around in attics, cellars and backyards of our town since Charlie Jenkins’ great grandfather joined up with the Texas Rangers.
