Special to the PRESS
Ahead of the November 7, 2023, Special Joint Election, early voting for Cameron County and other elections will commence next week.
Beginning Monday, October 23, and continuing through November 3, residents of South Padre Island can find voting booths in the lobby of South Padre Island City Hall at 4601 Padre Blvd. with call-in curbside for those in need.
Port Isabel residents can vote at Port Isabel City Hall City Commission Chambers Meeting Room at 305 E. Maxan St., and Laguna Vista residents will vote at Laguna Vista City Hall at 122 Fernandez St.
Of note, this year’s ballot has two important propositions. Proposition 9 is a Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) for retired Texas teachers. Proposition 4 is a constitutional amendment to authorize the legislature to establish a temporary limit on the maximum appraised value of real property other than a residence homestead for ad valorem tax purposes and to increase the amount of the exemption from ad valorem taxation by a school district applicable to residence homesteads from $40,000 to $100,000.
Additionally, voters will consider the Voter Approval Tax Ratification Election (VATRE), which aims to secure additional funding of approximately $3.6 million for allocation to crucial initiatives, including employee raises and addressing escalating insurance costs for the 2023-2024 school year.
Other propositions on the ballot include constitutional amendments to create a broadband infrastructure fund; higher education research; water infrastructure; gas-fueled power plants; maintenance and creation of state parks; tax exemptions for medical equipment and child-care facilities; banning lawmakers from imposing “wealth taxes” without voter approval; raising the mandatory retirement age for state judges; the protection of generally accepted farming and ranching practices from state and local regulation.
