The SPI City Council addressed several key items during the October 18 Council session, including approving a marketing buy with the San Antonio Spurs and Visit South Padre. Mayor McNulty and council members Ken Medders, Rees Langston, Joe Ricco and Kerry Schwartz were present. Eva-Jean Dalton did not attend the meeting.

Lori Moore, the Operation Services Manager for the Convention Center, briefly introduced this proposal and introduced Cindy Trevino, the Marketing Director and a representative from Predictive Data Labs. Moore also indicated that representatives from the Spurs organization were there. Despite the opportunity for questions and discussion, no one on the council raised any queries during the session. The council unanimously approved the motion for $283,000 to go to the marketing buy.

While specific details of the partnership between the city, the San Antonio Spurs, and Visit South Padre were not disclosed, it was noted that the Spurs, an NBA team with five championships to their name, are set to become a part of the SPI Family.

Moore noted that the target audience for the marketing area already visits South Padre Island, and Councilman Ricco remarked, “Yes, low-hanging fruit,” suggesting potential for this marketing endeavor to attract additional visitors, particularly the up to 65,000 basketball enthusiasts who attend Spurs home games.

The South Padre Island City Council is taking strides to enhance the city’s appeal and tourism potential through various initiatives, setting the stage for growth and improvement.
