This past Friday, October 27, the (7-2, 2-0) Port Isabel Tarpons hosted the (4-4, 1-1) La Grulla Gators in the final regular season game for both teams. A win by the Tarpons, and they would be district champions.
Meanwhile, an upset by the Gators would result in a three-way district tie for first place.
Fortunately, the “Seawall Defense” did an outstanding job against the Gators, holding them at bay for most of the game. The Tarpons’ offense got rolling in the second half as Port Isabel cruised to a 28-7 win.
The game took an early defensive tone as both teams went scoreless in the first quarter. The Gators held the Tarpon’s offense to 29 yards in their first three possessions. Meanwhile, the Tarpons’ defense came up with some big plays, such as an interception by FS Anthony Garcia and a forced fumble by LB Edward Garza, which ended the Gators’ drives.
In the second quarter, RB Luis Ramos gave the Tarpons their first lead as he bolted free for a 77-yard touchdown run.
On the ensuing Gators’ drive, they managed to reach the Tarpons’ 34-yard line. In a great defensive play, PI defenders LB Garza and DB Robert Medina sandwiched the receiver as he attempted to catch the ball.
Garza knocked the ball out of the receivers’ hands, and Medina alertly snatched it out of the air. Medina then proceeded to return the intercepted ball 74 yards for the score. The Tarpons headed into halftime with a 14-0 lead.
