Creativity takes center stage on Sundays at Lobo Del Mar, overlooking the picturesque bay of South Padre Island. Once a week, sometimes more, Babette Thanem (BB) sets up a creative crafting and painting area at the local restaurant. She dons her brushes and shows her participants that anyone can create artwork regardless of skill level or talent.
“In February 2022, the journey began,” BB recalls, marking the inception of painting and craft events that have since become a beloved tradition. With no formal training, BB’s artistic roots trace back to a mischievous youth, where walls became canvases despite their mother’s disapproval. Recognizing the potential, Granny adamantly protected these early masterpieces from the house painters’ brushes.
The idea to teach emerged after homeschooling five children. BB’s younger brother, Brady, sensed an opportunity to fill the void left by a departing sip-and-paint instructor. Initially hesitant, BB’s reluctance turned to joy as the classes unfolded at Lobo Del Mar, the family’s beloved and bustling bayside eatery.
