Over the past two months, while the Port Isabel High School Tarpon football team dominated the field, the Silver Tarpon band earned accolades in 4 area band competitions when not accompanying them at football games. They became Class A Champions in the Bands of America track and ultimately finished as Area E finalists in the University Interscholar League’s (UIL) track.

The band traveled to Veterans Memorial Stadium on September 30 for the Bands of America South Texas Regional Championship against 23 other area bands. They were given first-place honors and declared Regional Class A Champions when they competed against fellow high schools with fewer than 600 students in 10-12 grade.

They also walked away with three other prestigious awards that day: Best Music Performance, Best Visual Performance (for their choreography), and Best General Effect, which were given for their ability to immerse audiences in their performance while conveying a powerful message. These accolades validate the band’s exceptional musicianship, synchronized movements, and the overall emotional impact they leave on both judges and spectators.

Their repertoire was called ‘Voices of Glass’ and it featured: “Heart of Glass” by Deborah Harry and Chris Stein; “Chandelier” by Sia Furler and Jesse Shatkin; “With Heart and Voice” by David Gillingham; and “Symphonic Metamorphosis II: Turandot, Scherzo” by Paul Hindemith.
