This Monday, November 20, the Port Isabel Tarpons basketball team hosted the IDEA North Mission Warriors in a non-district matchup. Entering the game, the Tarpons were coming off a 58-54 loss to Brownsville Veterans, while the Warriors were coming off a 95-27 loss to Seven Lakes.
The Tarpons got on the scoreboard first with a pair of free throws by Shaun Moore. After the Warriors tied the game up at 2-2, the Tarpon’s defense tightened up. The suffocating Tarpons defense stole the ball nine times as they went on a 19-0 run. In the last few minutes of the first quarter, the Warriors offense started to make shots but still trailed 31-11 at the end of the first quarter.
The Warriors went on a small 4-0 run to open the second quarter. With under five minutes to go in the first half, PI’s Aiden Sanchez grabbed a rebound and made the basket stopping a scoring drought by PI. PI then went on a 12-0 run as PI’s Jeffrey Smith two quick baskets right before the half gave PI a commanding 43-15 lead at halftime.
As the second half got underway, there was a lull in scoring. The Warriors attempted several 3-pointers to catch up, but they were not going in. In the meantime, the Tarpon’s offense also missed some shots but still managed to extend their lead to 62-20 by the end of the third quarter.
