This Tuesday, November 28, the Port Isabel Tarpons basketball team played a non-district game against the visiting Lyford Bulldogs.
The Tarpons got off to a slow start in the first quarter, but they found their groove once they made their first basket. Defensively, the Tarpons half-court defense held the Bulldogs scoreless by way of steals, blocks, and forced turnovers as they went on an 11-0 run.
The Bulldogs finally made a basket midway in the first quarter. A few plays later, PI’s Jeffrey Smith stole the ball at midcourt and drove back for the layup as PI took a 13-2 lead with under three minutes to go in the quarter.
Right before the end of the first quarter, Cleveland Smith found J. Smith open in the wings for the 3-pointer as the Tarpons closed the period with a 19-5 lead.
As the second quarter got underway, the Tarpons’ shooting cooled off as Port Isabel missed eight straight baskets. The Tarpons finally made a basket three minutes into the second quarter when Cl. Smith scored on a reverse layup, giving PI a 22-9 lead.
The Tarpons continued to struggle with their shot but improved as the quarter went on as they headed into halftime with a 35-15 lead.
