BROWNSVILLE, TX — This past Wednesday, November 29, the Lady Tarpons traveling softball team drove down Highway 48 to take on Brownsville Lopez. The Lady Tarpons started off the game with a single by the leadoff hitter.
The next batter hit a grounder towards the pitcher who threw out the baserunner at second base then at first for the double play. Next up to bat was Kimberly Barrera, who hit the ball into leftfield for a double. Unfortunately, the next batter hit a fly ball caught for the third and final out.
In the bottom of the first inning, Chelsea Gonzalez took the mound as the Lady Tarpons went on defense. The first Lopez batter hit a fly ball that landed between three defenders- each thought the other would catch the ball. The baserunner reached second base on the miscommunication by the Lady Tarpons.
The next batter hit a bunt, but the thrown ball exceeded the first baseman. Lopez took advantage of the mishap as the first run of the game came in. Things got dicey as Lopez managed to get the bases loaded, but pitcher Gonzalez closed out the inning with two strikeouts. Lopez took an early 1-0 lead after one inning.
In the top of the second inning, the Lady Tarpons quickly saw themselves down with two outs after a pop-up and a strikeout. The next batter hit a nice line drive to right field for a single to keep the inning going. Carmen Garza hit a fly ball to center field for a single as the baserunner advanced to third base.
During the next batter’s turn, Garza attempted to steal second base. The catcher overthrew the second baseman, and the ball went into the outfield. Both baserunners came in for the score. The next batter was struck out as the Lady Tarpons took a 2-1 lead.
