City plans special election after vacancy

In a special City Council meeting on December 18 at 9 a.m., Mayor Patrick McNulty presented an item for discussion and potential action, focused on approving the Order of Special Election for Municipalities scheduled for February 3, 2024. This election aimed to fill a position in the unexpired term of Council Member, Place 5, which was left vacant after the unexpected passing of Councilwoman Eva Jean Dalton.

As outlined in the Home Rule Charter and accordance with State requirements, the City conducted the Special Election on February 3, 2024. The process included an early voting period from January 17, 2024, to January 30, 2024, with specific days and times pending confirmation.

Key dates associated with the Special Election:
• On December 18, 2023, at 9 a.m., the Order Special Election was approved.
• After the approval of the Order on December 18, 2023, Candidate Applications will be accepted.
• On December 22, 2023, the Notice of Ballot Placement Drawing will be posted.
• City Hall remained closed for the Christmas Holidays on December 25 & 26, 2023.
• The Candidate Application Deadline will be December 27, 2023, at 5:00 p.m.
• On December 28, 2023, at 10 a.m., the Drawing for Placement on the Ballot will occur.
• The Last Day to Receive ABBM/FPCA is on January 23, 2024, by the end of the day.
• Considerations included contracting with Cameron County for election services, with estimated costs not exceeding $17,000. The execution of these services will require a budget amendment. The City Council will deliberate on these matters in the relevant sessions.
