Cameron County witnessed a groundbreaking event this past weekend as it hosted the first-ever holiday drone show in South Texas. The enchanting spectacle, “Dashing through the Sky: A Christmas Drone Story,” unfolded at the Cameron County Amphitheater on Saturday, December 16, to a packed-out crowd.

The sky above the theater became the canvas for an awe-inspiring display of lights and animations courtesy of 400 drones suspended in mid-air. Cheers and applause filled the air as drone-made images, from Christmas greetings to spectacular galactic experiences, created a stunning sight, adding a new dimension to traditional festivities. Spectators gathered to witness this innovative holiday celebration, marveling at the marriage of technology and festive spirit.

“It was amazingly choreographed,” said SPI resident Amy Beggs, who opted for bikes to reach the event, avoiding what she described as “terrible” traffic. Attendees took to social media to share their photos with notable images by local realtor Maurine Salas, who, like Beggs, hopes shows like this will become an annual event.

Overall, posts and comments on social media were positive, with a few expressing gratitude for an event that did not include fireworks and that was a quiet show that didn’t produce noise and paper debris.

The event, presented by SpaceX, area businesses and Cameron County, featured two free light shows. The first drone show commenced after 6 p.m., captivating the audience with holiday animations brought to life through synchronized drone movements. The second show, scheduled for 8:30 p.m., presented an “interstellar twist,” enhancing the experience with an imaginative and cosmic touch.
