On February 9, 2024, the Port Isabel Junior High School students participated in an interactive STEM robotics workshop, and students were chosen to participate on their exceptional academic achievements in science and math.

Texas A&M Spark! PK-12 Engineering Education Outreach (TA&MS!) workshop was hosted at the Port Isabel Junior High School by the College & Career Readiness Department at the Port Isabel Independent School District (PI-ISD), according to a press release.

According to the press release, the workshop was led by Andy De La Cruz, the TA&MS! Program manager and presenter, facilitated the hands-on activity that fosters student’s interest in and strengthening their critical thinking skills, coding, and robotics knowledge.

The press release stated that the event had 50 sixth-grade enthusiastic students in attendance at the workshop, where they had the opportunity to work with palm-sized Ozobot robots. The Ozobot robots would follow guided colored paths the students drew themselves, thus further understanding and implementing coding and robotic knowledge.

As stated in the press release, Superintendent Terri Capistran said, “We are thrilled to provide our students with this unique opportunity to explore the fascinating world of robotics and coding,” and she continued, “Initiatives like these align with our district’s commitment to preparing students for success in college and careers.”

The Director of College and Career readiness, Dr. Juan J. Mendoza said, ““We believe that exposure to hands-on STEM experiences is crucial for our students’ future success,” said Dr. Mendoza. “Events like these not only inspire curiosity but also help develop valuable skills that are essential in today’s rapidly evolving job market.”

Port Isabel Junior High Principal, Debra Quist, along with dedicated teachers, were present to support and encourage students throughout the workshop. Principal Quist emphasized the importance of providing students with diverse learning opportunities to prepare them for the challenges and opportunities of the future, as stated in the press release.

At the conclusion of the workshop, it was noted that the interactive robotics workshop is part of Spark!’s broader mission to empower Rio Grande Valley students with the knowledge and skills necessary for success in advanced manufacturing and other STEM-related fields. By fostering a passion for STEM education at an early age, initiatives like this aim to equip students with the tools they need to thrive in an increasingly technology-driven world.
