This past Saturday, March 9, the Port Isabel Boys Powerlifting team competed in the Region V Division 2 Powerlifting meet held in Kingsville, TX. The meet featured 145 lifters from 27 schools throughout the region. In addition to Port Isabel, other schools competing included CC Calallen, Beeville Jones, Raymondville, Rockport-Fulton, Sinton, Devine, Ingleside, and Alice.
The top three teams’ order of finish was: 1. Tuloso-Midway with 25 points, 2. Calallen (23), and 3. Somerset (19). The Port Isabel team finished in 11th place with 8 points. Although it didn’t finish as one of the top teams, it still managed to qualify six athletes for the State Meet.
Advancing includes senior Vicente Azuara, who competes in the 123 class and has a total lift of 1045 pounds (Squat:405, Bench:235, Dead Lift:405). He will accompanied by Arnold Lopez (114-class, Total Lift:930), Aaron Barrera (181-class, Total Lift:1450), Zeke Palestina (220-class, Total Lift:1575), Mario Nava (242-class, Total Lift:1550), and Carlos Cabrera (275-class, Total Lift:1500).
Jose Galvan (181 class, Total Lift:1225), Luis Varela (275 class, Total Lift:1435), and Noah Hernandez *BO were others competing.
Before the meet, the Girls also had their own Region V D2 Powerlifting Meet held in Edinburg on March 27. The meet featured 136 lifters from 17 schools. The top teams were: 1. Robstown with 53 points, 2. Bishop (44), and 3. Geronimo Navarro (40). Port Isabel finished in 10th place with 4 points.
Stacey Suarez, who competes in the 105 class, is the lone PI lifter who qualified for the State Meet with a Total Lift of 635 (Squat: 280, Bench: 125, Dead Lift: 230).
Others competing were Esmeralda Montoya (Total Lift: 760), Daniela Alonso (Total Lift: 690), and Iyairy Guzman (Total Lift: 750). The following also competed but “Bombed Out”: Samantha Schrank, Nataly Ramirez, Saturn Trejo, and Emma Villarreal.
The Girls State Powerlifting Meet will be at the Comerica Center in Frisco, TX, on Friday, March 15. The Boys State Powerlifting Meet will be at the Taylor County Expo Center in Abilene, TX, on Saturday, March 23.
Team placement is the summation of the school’s combined individual awarded points. Individual placement was on the summation of three lifts: 1. Squat, 2. Bench Press, and 3. Deadlift, which results in a Total Lift amount. Athletes received points as follows: 7, 5, 3, 2, or 1 for finishing as one of the first five finishers in each weight class. *BO/Bombed Out means a lifter has failed to complete a lift in any of the required lifts and, therefore, is given a score of zero.
