On February 22, the event Tourism Town Hall meeting took place at Daddy’s Seafood & Cajun Kitchen on South Padre Island (SPI). The meeting was open to the public to announce information to the community about the work and accomplishments of the city’s tourism promotion team, Visit South Padre Island (VSPI).
The VSPI Initiative’s Executive Director, Blake Henry said, “We are working towards year-round occupancy, eliminating the slow seasons in between major events like Winter Tourists, Spring Break, and summer.”
The Director of Marketing of VSPI, Cindy Trevino, works with individual vacationers and families visiting SPI. Her team targets demographics for seasons like Winter Texans and Spring Breakers and cultivates the possibilities with SPI’s partnership with the San Antonio Spurs.
The Director of Sales for VSPI, Harmony Heard, shared some remarkable accomplishments and provided insight into her team’s objectives and strategies. Heard’s team plays a crucial role in driving group bookings for the island. They are working to position themselves as the premier destination for group conferences, meetings, and events, Heard said,
The VSPI is responsible for providing convention services and giving event planners a wide range of support. The support helps ensure seamless execution of their event and enhance attendee satisfaction. All in hopes that they will tell others and keep coming back, driving tourism to the island.
Lastly, they’re responsible for conducting familiarization tours with potential clients to secure future vacation bookings. At the time, Heard’s team hosted six travel planners from Mexico City.
Heard said, “We worked very hard with the State Tourism Department to get them here. This familiarization tour is opening the door to a virtually untapped market that we are certain will generate a huge return.” said concluded, “I am proud to say that my team is setting new records in sales revenue, customer satisfaction, and market share,”
SPI’s pillars of success include the retention of existing groups alongside new customer acquisition. They achieve this by participating in industry events, trade shows, and other networking opportunities to showcase the island to event planners. They constantly analyze industry trends, market demands, and competitor offerings to refine sales strategies to stay ahead. When needed, hotels and venues create promotions and discounts to incentivize groups to choose South Padre Island over other destinations.
“I am beyond proud of the team and honored to tell you that they were able to secure 486 opportunities for groups, an overwhelming increase of 31% over last year,” said Heard. “This led to the team securing 33,000 room nights for the island, thereby increasing booked room nights by 34% over last year.”
According to Heard, no number over 30,000 room nights has been achieved in the last decade. The team generated an economic impact of 7 million dollars more for 2023.
Heard said, “Without the collaboration of our hotels and partners, success is not possible,” she also said, “They work tirelessly not only for their respective organizations but for the island as a whole.”
The team has revenue goals for both room nights and convention centers. A key milestone was reached in fiscal year 21/22 when convention center sales exceeded budget by 47%. Last year’s budget was exceeded by 88%, with plenty of room to grow.
Heard then recognized the contributions of the entire team, including the teams under Operations Manager Joey Rodriguez and Facility Booking Coordinator Ms. Yolanda Davila. They help ensure that every event succeeds and returns to the island.
“Beginning in January 2024, we kicked off the first quarterly Island Partner luncheon, igniting networking and collaboration and providing education and industry updates to our stakeholders,” said Heard. “The next Island Partner luncheon will be held on May 7, 2024, with Hilton Garden Inn as our host venue.”
The Island Impact Award recognizes individuals who strive to bring groups to the island. For the first quarter, Chief Claudine O’Carroll and Captain Gilbert Silva received the award for the hundreds of thousands of dollars of economic impact they generated by bringing multiple conferences and training events to the island.
Doug Kennedy, a professional hospitality trainer from the Kennedy Training Network, will offer coaching for hospitality leadership teams and front-line level staff on May 8, 2024, at 8:30 am for stakeholders to attend.
“As we look to the future, we remain committed to innovation, collaboration, and sustainability, ensuring that South Padre Island continues to thrive as a premier destination,” said Heard. “I am confident that together, we will achieve even greater success in the coming years.”
