Tarpons set personal record at relays

This past Friday, Port Isabel Early College High School hosted the Tarpon Relays Track & Field Meet at Tarpon Stadium. Several Tarpon athletes set new Personal Records (PR) and Season Records (SR) at the co-ed meet.

The Port Isabel relay teams won gold in the men’s division in all three relays.

The team of Robert Medina, Anthony Garcia, Nathaniel Gonzalez, and Luis Ramos won the 4×100 Relay with a time of 45.09 seconds.

The team of Walter Cantu, Michael Bryant, Gonzalez, and Ramos won the 4×200 Relay (1:36.68).
Lastly, the team of Jesus Gaitan, Quinton Flores, and the twins Cleveland and Christian Smith, won the 4 x 400 Relay race (3:49.02).

Ramos also won gold in the Long Jump with a distance of 19’-03.00” and won the bronze medal in the 200-meter run with a time of 23.79s (SR).

Christian Smith also won gold in the Triple Jump event with a distance of 40’-03.00”, setting a new personal record. He also won a silver medal in the 400-meter run with a time of 57.66s (PR) and came in fourth in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:12.60 (SR).

Cleveland Smith won silver in the High Jump with a height of 5’-06.00” (PR). He also won bronze in the Long Jump with a distance of 18’-00.5” (PR) and was fourth in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:12.60 (SR).
Other top three finishes were, Gonzalez, Silver, 200 Meters, 23.67s (SR); Garcia, Silver, Long Jump, 18’-04.00” (SR); Joe Jimenez, Silver, Pole Vault, 8’-00.00” (SR); Gaitan, bronze, 800 Meters, 2:11.89 (PR); Jorge Garcia, bronze, 1600 Meters, 4:48.61 (PR); Jay Valdez, bronze, 35’-04.00” (PR); Alvaro Rocha, bronze, Discus, 98’-00” (PR); Jeffrey Smith, bronze, High Jump, 5’-04.00”; Christian Garcia, bronze, Triple Jump, 39’-06.00” (PR), and Mikel Sosa, gold, Pole Vault, 9’-06.00” (PR).

Meanwhile, in the women’s division, the Port Isabel relay teams also did well in the relay races. The team of Lizbeth Perez, Elle Wall, Amber Villarreal, and Valery Gonzalez won gold in the 4×100 Relay (52.77).

In contrast, the team of Emily Burrage, Julieta Ruiz, Villarreal, and Gonzalez won the 4×200 relay race (2:00.12).

Relay runners placing in other events include freshman, Wall, won two other gold medals in the High Jump with a height of 4’-10.00” and the Long Jump with a distance of 17’-01.00”. She also won silver in the 100-meter run with a time of 13.17s (PR).

Perez also won gold in the 400-meter run with a time of 1:04.90 (PR) and came in fourth in the Long Jump with a distance of 14’-01.00”.

Burrage also won silver in the 100m Hurdles, 17.67 (SR), and in the High Jump, 4’-08.00” (SR).
Gonzalez also won gold in the Triple Jump with a distance of 30’-06.50” (PR), and A. Villarreal won silver in the Long Jump, 15’-05.00” (PR).

Other medalists included Emily Ramos, 100m Hurdles, 16.23; Chelsea Gonzalez, Discus, 128’-00” (PR); Jackie Nava, Pole Vault, 6’-00.00” (PR); Julieta Ruiz, 800 Meters, 2:41.95 (PR) and bronze, 1600 Meters, 6:30.05; Alisson Solorio, 100m Hurdles, 19.57; Escarlet Urrutia, Shot Put, 30’-11.00” (PR); Krysalee Grenier, silver, Triple Jump, 29’-11.00” and bronze, 100 meters, 14.20 (SR);

The meet featured athletes from the following schools: Port Isabel, Vanguard Rembrandt, Jubilee Brownsville, IDEA Brownsville, IDEA Frontier Brownsville, IDEA North Mission, IDEA Pharr, and IDEA Weslaco Pike.

Port Isabel finished first in the Women’s division with 203 points, followed by IDEA Pharr (90) and IDEA Weslaco Pike (55). Port Isabel finished first in the Men’s division with 196 points, followed by IDEA Weslaco Pike (107) and Vanguard Rembrandt (81).
