According to South Padre Island Police, on February 20, at approximately 1:45 p.m., an unnamed male subject reported his car stolen from the 300 block of Padre Boulevard on South Padre Island. The subject subsequently used an app to “ping” his car’s location in Port Isabel, according to a South Padre Island Police Department (SPIPD) police incident report.
The alleged perpetrator, 42-year-old Jerry Franklin Rogers, who lived at that address, had previous run-ins with police, according to sources close to the case. Rogers is a resident of Columbus, Ohio.
SPIPD investigators arranged for backup by SWAT and Port Isabel’s Police Department (PIPD) officers as they proceeded to the given location. After confirming that the stolen vehicle was in the garage, the three agencies surrounded the home and asked Rogers to exit and surrender to the authorities. The confrontation led to a standoff in the quiet neighborhood near Derry Elementary.
A short time later, Rogers jumped out of a second-story window and attempted to flee, according to sources who witnessed the event, but Rogers was quickly tackled to the ground by police and arrested.
On February 22, Rogers was transported to the Cameron County, Carrizales-Rucker Detention Center in Olmito, TX, and booked on one count of Theft of Property and given a $10,000 bond. According to Cameron County Sheriff’s Office’s online inmate list, a charge of Evading Arrest garnered an additional bond of $5,000.
