The Lady Tarpons softball team is wrapping up its first round of district games. They started off the district schedule with a 12-2 loss to Zapata, but they have now won three games in a row. With wins over La Grulla and Hidalgo this past week, the Lady Tarpons now stand at 3-1 in the district standings.
This past Tuesday, Port Isabel hosted La Grulla in a district matchup. The Lady Tarpons got off to a great start, as Kimberly Barrera and Chelsea Gonzalez hit home runs to give Port Isabel a 4-1 lead after one inning of play.
In the top of the second inning, Port IsabeI’s starring pitcher, Gonzalez, had a “three up, three down” inning, which included two strikeouts.
As they headed into the bottom of the second inning, the Lady Tarpons’ offense continued to score runs. Natalie Martinez’s double brought in two runs to make it a 6-1 game. Gonzalez then hit her second home run of the night to make it 8-1. Andrea Garcia and Carmen Garza each had an RBI as Port Isabel jumped out to a 10-1 lead.
The Lady Tarpons held the Lady Gators scoreless in the top of the third inning. Meanwhile, Port Isabel added two more runs in the bottom of the inning, increasing their lead to 12-1. Garcia’s triple to right field was the highlight of the inning.
With the threat of the mercy rule going into effect, the Lady Gators stepped up their game and scored three runs in the top of the fourth inning. La Grulla then held Port Isabel scoreless in the bottom of the fourth inning but still trailed PI 12-4.
In the top of the fifth inning, the Lady Tarpons held the Lady Gators to zero runs. In the bottom of the fifth inning, La Grulla gave up several walks and paid the price. With the bases loaded, a single by Julie Mar brought in a run and gave PI a 14-4 lead, causing the game to be called due to the mercy rule.
The Lady Tarpons picked up their second win of the week with a 10-0 victory over the Hidalgo Lady Pirates this past Friday, March 22. They will be in action again on Friday, April 5, when they take on the Zapata Lady Hawks at 7 p.m.
