The City of South Padre Island held a regular City Council meeting at the municipal building on Wednesday, April 3, at 5:30 p.m. There were no comments during the public comments forum.
The meeting opened with a council member wanting to recognize South Padre Island Police Chief Claudine O’Carroll and her team for their excellent service and work, especially during this past spring break. The council members also wanted to thank Chief Jim Piggs, of the Fire Department, for their “24/7 on-the-clock work”.
The council approved invoices for payment and the meeting minutes from March 27, 2024. Then, the council made a motion to move to the regular agenda.
Under the regular agenda, the council approved Cameron County’s Letter of Support for the United States Postal Service, naming it Starbase for the county’s unincorporated area where SpaceX conducts operations.
The council then approved the purchase of the Siddons-Martin ladder truck and pumper truck for up to $2.3 Million. Chief Jim Piggs of the Fire Department stated the benefits of this purchase included a lowered ISO rating for the fire department. This lowered rating would mean the Insurance Services Office would deem the fire department well-equipped and lower their insurance rates. Chief Piggs continued by stating that another benefit would be not needing to borrow from other departments.
The council also unanimously approved reducing the number of members of the Special Events Committee from 7 members to 5. The council then stated that there were three vacancies on the committee.
The council then approved the appointment of applicant Randy Greenwood to the Special Events Committee. The council asked for closing comments and moved to adjourn.
