City approves old, new business

The City of Port Isabel held a regular commissioner’s meeting at the City Commission Chambers Meeting Room on Maxan Street on Tuesday, March 26, at 7 p.m.

The council opened with comments on the success of the Eclipse at the Lighthouse and thanked those who made the special event possible.

During regular reports, the council discussed updates from Department heads, including administration, EDC Revolving Loan, EMS, Fire, Public Works, Museum, Port Isabel Event & Cultural Center, Library, and Police.

Under old business, the first two items led by Port Isabel City Manager Jared Hockema were approved. They were for authorizing the expenditure of project funds by the Port Isabel Economic Development Corporation for the renovation of the Port Isabel Event and Cultural Center and the conceptual design of the Port Isabel Historic Sites Visitors Center.

During the new business, the council approved adopting the resolution regarding the civil rights policies for the 2019 GLO Community Development Grant and designating authorized signatories for contractual and financial documents about the 202 GLO Community Development Grant.

The council also approved a proclamation declaring April as the City of Port Isabel Fair Housing Month and agreed to dedicate a 0.20-acre tract of the Santa Isabel Grant 8.68 acres out of Tract C for a utility easement, making electricity accessible to the shooting range.

The council approved a resolution authorizing the publication of a Notice of Intention to Issue Certificates of Obligation, which will be used for the construction, demolition, and restoration of structures and materials, supplies, and equipment.

The council also approved a resolution to accept the 2023-2024 Stone Garden Grant, which will help fund some overtime for police patrols.

It was also approved to appoint Lizbeth Olvera as a reserve officer with the Port Isabel Police to the requirements of Chapter 341 of the Texas Local Government Code.

The council approved a bid to expand the Port Isabel Cemetery, subject to reimbursement from loan proceeds. They also approved an agreement with Metamorphosis for design services for the Lighthouse Classroom, subject to the approval of the Texas Historical Commission.

The council approved terminating the City of Port Isabel’s employee insurance as of May 1, 2024, and entering an agreement with United Healthcare. This will help cover some expenses and keep their employees insured. Employees can rest assured that any deductibles they have paid will be carried over to the new insurance.

The council then closed the session by announcing the 40th annual Causeway run, which was held on Saturday, April 14, 2024, and encouraging participants. The council then adjourned.
