The 2023-2024 Port Isabel Tarpons girls’ soccer team finished their season with a 13-9 overall and 9-3 district record. The team finished second in the district standings behind district champions (13-1) IDEA Riverview. During the playoffs, Port Isabel won its first playoff game (vs Progreso 1-0) since the 2021 season. The following players were awarded All-District Honors for their efforts on the field.
Senior Laura Mosqueda, a true star on the team, was rightfully selected as the district’s Offensive MVP. As a captain, she led by example, finishing the season with 14 goals and 29 points. Her precision as the team’s main penalty kicker, making six out of seven penalty kick attempts, was a testament to her skill and dedication.
Daniela Hernandez (Senior), who scored a team-high 17 goals and 35 points, was awarded 1st Team Forward honors. Mia Perdomo (Jr) earned 2nd Team Forward honors after scoring nine goals and 19 points this year.
Melanie Hernandez (Junior) earned 1st Team Mid-Field honors. She finished with eight goals and 18 points in the season. Valery Gonzalez (Senior) and Marishka Baston (Sophmore) earned Mid-Field Honorable Mention honors. They scored six and four goals, respectively.
Defensively, Desiree Vidaurri (Junior) earned 1st Team Goalie honors. Vidaurri, a staunch defender, racked up a whopping 105 saves. Dulce Pardo (Senior) was selected 1st Team Defense; she recorded a team-high 59 steals. Katy Espinoza (Senior) earned Honorable Mention Defense; she was second on the team with 52 steals.
The team will take a hit next season as they will lose several seniors who were 2-to-3-year starters on both sides of the ball. But head coach Johnny Nieto is already looking forward to summer soccer league, hoping to see them gain “more experience, to build better ball work and soccer IQ.”
