Dr. Hilda Silva announced her candidacy for Texas Southmost College (TSC), Place 7.
Dr. Hilda Silva, a candidate with a remarkable 43 years of experience in higher education, is vying for Texas Southmost College (TSC), Place 7. Her journey began at Pan American University (PAU) where she majored in Community Service, graduating in 1975. She further honed her skills with a master’s in education (major in Counseling and guidance) from PAU, and a doctorate in Administration & Supervision from the University of Houston in 2000. Her educational journey culminated with leadership training at Harvard University in 2005.
She then earned her doctorate in Administration & Supervision at the University of Houston in 2000. Silva completed her education with leadership training in 2005 at Harvard University.
She notes that her career began at Texas Southmost College (TSC) in 1980 as a Counselor and that she held that position for ten years. She worked in various roles serving students while at TSC and later at UTB/TSC. From 1990 to 2001, she was the Director of Learning Support Services at UT Brownsville and TSC.
The candidate also recounts the many courses she has instructed and is the author of three scholarly book chapters, one revised scholarly book chapter, and four academic journals published.
Silva has been appointed to and served on multiple boards, including those of the department, college, university, professional, and community services.
Dr. Silva’s vision for the Board is clear and student-centric. She aims to collaborate with the administration to focus on current, transparent student success outcomes such as graduation rates and passing rates of programs. She recognizes the significant impact of the community college on its students and the community at large, and how these metrics affect the college’s accreditation.
Early voting commences on Apr. 22, 2024, at the Port Isabel City Hall on 305 E. Maxan St. and runs through Apr. 30, 2024. Election Day is May 4.
