On Friday, May 24 Port Isabel Early College High School (PIECHS) senior baseball player, Tristian Garcia, signed his letter of intent with Texas Southern University (TSU), a Division 1 school.

Although the baseball team struggled this year, Garcia’s prowess at bat stayed consistent all season. He had several games where he was perfect at the plate and ended up finishing with an eye-opening .673 batting average. According to Maxpreps.com, he along with Kaden Hall out of Northside Vernon, led the state of Texas in batting average regardless of school classification.

This season Garcia had 33 hits on 49 At Bats with a .724 On Base Percentage and was credited with six doubles, seven triples and a homerun.

Garcia made the Varsity team as a freshman and quickly made his mark as he was selected as the district’s 32-4A Newcomer of the Year. As a sophomore he earned 32-4A 1st Team All-District Catcher honors.

As a junior he was chosen as the 32-4A Utility Player of the Year. As a senior he was selected 32-4A 1st Team All-District Catcher (unanimously) and 1st Team All-District Pitcher. He also received Academic All-State.

According to PIECHS baseball head coach, Albert Barberena III, TSU made a strong push to recruit Garcia. Coach Barberena was excited for the young athlete.

“I think Tristian having the opportunity to play at a collegiate level is great,” said Coach Barberena. “Texas Southern University welcomed him with open arms.”

Garcia made a trip to TSU for a private workout and to hear more about their school.

“I talked to all the coaches and I liked their program,” said Garcia. “They loved how I played and performed when I went there.”

Garcia is receiving a partial scholarship to play at TSU and will be studying Kinesiology with plans to be a coach in the future.
