Former Port Isabel football player Brayan Medina is in the middle of his training camp in preparation for his upcoming mixed martial arts flyweight bout. After a long day of work, Medina trains with Jason Lee and Johnny Garcia at Bare Knuckle Crew (BKC) Jiu Jitsu in Port Isabel. He then heads over to Brownsville to practice with Striking coach Victor Solis out of EVO Kickboxing, finishing up his routine around 10-10:30 p.m. every day.
Two years ago, Medina felt he had too much free time on his hands and kept catching himself in “tricky situations.” So, he joined a jiu jitsu gym and quickly started to fall in love with it. He then started to try some kickboxing and enjoyed that as well.
After two years of training, he felt he was ready to enter the cage in pursuit of an MMA career. He went on to make his debut earlier this year in February at the “Rise FC 1: The Beginning” event held in Victoria, Texas. He squared off against Carlos Gutierrez and the bout went the distance with Gutierrez winning the fight via a unanimous decision.
Two months later, Medina bounced back with a win over Vincent Sandoval back on April 27 at the “Tap or Scrap 8” event held in Robstown, Texas. The fight was a slugfest from the opening bell as Medina ended the fight via a technical knockout (TKO) in the first round with 1:43 remaining on the clock.
Medina will be enjoying a homefield advantage when he takes on Michael Moylan during Texas Fight League’s MMA & K-1 Kickboxing event which will be held at the South Padre Island Convention Center on Saturday, July 27. Doors open at 5 p.m.
Medina currently holds a 1-1 amateur MMA record and according to Tapology.com, Medina is ranked #56 of 97 active Texas Amateur Flyweights. Meanwhile, his opponent Moylan (1-2) is ranked #61, but is on a two-fight losing streak.
