A young Mexican boy accused of stealing eight dollars in cash from a Mexican woman, is said to have escaped to Matamoros. This morning city officials received information that the young fellow had been chased on the other side and returned to this side by swimming in the river. He had divested himself of his clothes and when he landed on this side of the river, he sought cover at once. The officers think the boy is hiding in the brush somewhere near Freeport and they are keeping a sharp lookout for a Mexican boy wearing nothing but his birthday suit!
A Narrow Escape- This morning as Dr. W. J. Dougherty was coming downtown, walking along Elizabeth Street, between eight and nineth streets, he heard the crack of a small rifle, and simultaneously a bullet whizzed within a few inches of his face. He had stopped a moment to chat with Assistant Postmaster Pierce.
At once beat a hasty retreat from the spot. The doctor thinks the shots must have been fired by some boy, shooting at birds or else carelessly handling his gun. At the same time, he said he thought it would have been well to have the Law against firing weapons in the city limits enforced. careless (The Brownsville Herald July 31, 1913).
