On Jul. 4, 2024, a holiday marked by celebrations turned into a scene of alarm as multiple shark attacks occurred at various locations along South Padre Island (SPI).

Among the injured were Tabatha and Cary Sullivent, who suffered the most severe injuries of the four beachgoers bitten by the shark. Tabatha Sullivent had most of her left calf bitten off, while her husband Cary sustained two bites on his right leg while rescuing her. According to the Sullivent’s GoFundMe page, Tabatha reported that Cary has been discharged from the hospital and added, “I have movement in my toes and circulation in my foot.” She expressed gratitude for the support and prayers and commented on her journey to recovery.

Fire Chief Jim Pigg addressed the incident, stating, “Our hearts and prayers are with the injured and their families, and we hope for a speedy recovery.” The City of SPI emphasized their commitment to ensuring the safety of residents and visitors alike.

Cameron County Judge Eddie Trevino Jr. also issued a press release, urging caution for beachgoers and swimmers. He highlighted the collaborative efforts across city, state, and federal levels to respond to the situation effectively. Trevino expressed gratitude to those who responded promptly to the emergency, saying, “I want to thank our local good Samaritans and emergency response personnel for acting quickly and appropriately to aid those that were in need.”

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) released an official statement regarding the shark encounters. According to the TPWD, local game wardens and members of the Texas Game Warden Marine Tactical Operations Group were actively patrolling the beach by boat and land. The Department of Public Safety (DPS) provided aerial surveillance, while SPI Police Department and Cameron County rangers managed crowd control on the beach.

TPWD noted that shark encounters of this nature are rare in Texas. The City of SPI confirmed that the last shark attack occurred five years ago, underscoring the unusual nature of the July 4 incident.

As investigations continue, officials are advising all beachgoers to remain vigilant and adhere to safety guidelines to prevent further incidents. The local community and authorities are working together to ensure the safety and well-being of everyone enjoying the island’s beaches.
