For the first time, children ages eight to 12 are invited to attend the Port Isabel Lighthouse Keeper’s Summer Camp.

The one-day, three-hour camp is slated for Aug. 7, 8 & 9, and Aug. 14, 15 & 16, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m..
Campers will “experience the life of a modern-day Lighthouse Keeper and travel back in time nearly 500 years for stories of shipwrecks and rescues,” according to the official press release.

The immersive hands-on camp will include educational tours, arts and crafts, a treasure hunt, and more, all illustrating the day-to-day activities and experiences of a Lighthouse Keeper in the past versus one of modern times. Campers will learn the history of the Port Isabel Lighthouse including the reason for its initial construction in 1852 and how it has served sailors throughout history.

According to Museum Coordinator Coty Camacho, the goal behind this summer camp is to have the younger generation return to visit the Lighthouse with a deeper appreciation for its history.

“We want [campers] to experience what a lighthouse keeper was, learn the history about it, and want to come back next year,” said Camacho.

Valarie Bates, City of Port Isabel Marketing Director, says there is great excitement surrounding the debut of this summer camp. She hopes participants will walk away “feeling like a lighthouse keeper.”

A portion of the program will be held at the Port Isabel Historical Museum. The admission per camper is $10. Those interested in more information regarding the camp are invited to call Camacho at (956) 538-1652.
