On Monday, Aug. 12, the Port Isabel Lady Tarpons volleyball team hosted the San Perlita Lady Trojans in the Lady Tarpons season’s opener.
The Lady Tarpons got off to a great start in the best-of-five series. In the first set, they jumped up to a 2-0 lead before the Lady Trojans tied the game up at 2-2. Junior Nadia Flaig got a big spike at the net to give the Lady Tarpons a 3-2 lead.
The Lady Tarpons went on a 6-0 scoring streak behind the serving of Desiree Vidaurri and Flaig defending at the net. Flaig, who joined the varsity squad as a freshman, utilized her length to score several points at the net as the Lady Tarpons jumped out to a 9-2 lead.
The Lady Trojans eventually got the ball back on a misplay by the Lady Tarpons. The Lady Trojans then went on a 3-0 run before giving the ball back to PI with the score now 9-5 in favor of the Lady Tarpons.
With Port Isabel’s Flaig serving the ball, the Lady Tarpons went on a 10-0 run to go up with a commanding 19-5 lead.
The teams then went back and forth until San Perlita managed to go on a small 4-0 run, forcing PI to call a timeout as PI held onto a 23-13 lead.
With PI up 24-15, San Perlita could not return a spike ball by PI’s Hanna Mata and the Lady Tarpons took the first set, 25-15.
Unfortunately, the Lady Tarpons had some miscues in the next sets as the Lady Trojans came back to win the next three sets, 25-19, 25-21 and 25-23 to win the series.
The Lady Tarpons’ next game will be at home against the Raymondville Lady Bearkats on Aug. 20th with a 7 p.m. game start.
