[Point Isabel July 18, 1929] The old steel towers, that were part of the city since 1914 came crashing to earth on the given date. Standing like steel giants overlooking the city and certainly seen beyond the seashore were abandoned about five years before 1929. The towers found another home at that time, at Fort Brown.
San Benito contractor, C. F. Porter, was tasked with removing the iconic towers. Workmen began cutting through the lower portion early on a Thursday morning and by 2 p.m., the towers were toppled from their upright position.
After being removed from Ft. Brown, the message from the new owners (from Monterrey) was that the high-grade steal would be recast into firearms, Porter stated.
