Boca Chica Beach is set to have a clean-up in partnership with SpaceX and Adopt-a-Beach. SpaceX is set to
provide a complimentary lunch after the clean-up.
The event will be held on Sept. 28 from 9 a.m.- 12 p.m. Check-in will be at 8:30 a.m. It is free to the public.
The Cameron County Sheriff’s office announced the event on their official Facebook page. They shared that local community members and school districts were invited to join the effort.
According to the official Adopt-a-Beach website, the clean-up is part of a coast-wide event. Registration is
available for interested parties. An Eventbrite listing for the event lists hotels located around the area. The site said the hotels were offering discounted prices to those attending the clean-up. A discount code for South Padre Island is available.
Boca Chica is home to the SpaceX launch facility Starbase. Starbase is “One of the world’s first commercial
spaceports designed for orbital missions,” according to the official SpaceX website. The website continued to state that the main goal of Starbase is to “provide access to destinations in Earth orbit, the Moon, Mars and beyond.”
Adopt-a-Beach strongly encourages those attending the cleanup to wear closed-toe shoes, sunglasses, a hat and high-SPF sunscreen. Water in a reusable bottle and preferred cleaning gloves are also recommended. Equipment will be provided and picked up at check-in.
In the event of rain, the clean-up will still be held unless the weather is dangerous to the safety of the volunteers or makes the area inaccessible. Registered volunteers will receive a notification through email or phone if the event is canceled.
