Moments in Time: Double triple egg laid by hen

Moments in Time is a collection of recovered newspaper briefs and other publications, compiled by local historian, Steve Hathcock, offering a look back at the history of the Rio Grande Valley.

Double triple egg laid by hen
McAllen, TX. Sept. 29 – Mrs. C. M. Davidson owns a depression-busting hen who has been at her trade now for several months. The unusual fowl has a habit of laying double and triple eggs.

One of her newest products, a double egg, was displayed Friday at a local grocery concern. The egg was more than three inches in length and contained a complete white and yolk, inside them, a second egg, also containing complete construction and being the size of a normal hens egg. The Army Mule

Although the motor truck and the motorcycle are coming more into general use in the army every day, experts say that the army mule will never be completely displaced by the auto. After contemplating the many auto trucks that have been marooned in the mire as a result of the last heavy rains, we were convinced of the usefulness and reliability of the mule. Stubborn and vindictive, his enemies, the motors friends, called. Yet there is no more patient or plodding animal built with four legs. Watch him and his teammates haul their heavy loads past some mud stalled and useless haughty six-cylinder monster. And if you are scrutinizing “Brer” mule closely. They will be rewarded by catching the derisive gleam in his eye and the curled lip that so eloquently expressed his amused scorn for the high-toned gas dray.
Long live the army mule!
(The Rio Grande Rattler, published in the Field by the New York Division (National Guard) Oct. 3, 1916)
