The Mighty Tarpons Youth Football Camp is slated for Saturday, Nov. 9, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Tarpon Field. The event is free to the public and no registration is required.

Children ages four to fourteen are invited to attend. Attendees under six will go over flag football whereas the rest will be participating in tackle.

The first 50 kids will get a free T-shirt.

A team of five will coach the kids: Edward Torres as Head Coach, Ray Guerro, Edmundo Ramirez Jr. and Port Isabel City Commissioner Jeffery Martinez as Offensive and Defensive Line Coaches, and Alexander Infante as Quarterback Coach.

This is Ramirez’s second year with the organization, and he says the camp’s purpose is to teach the fundamentals of playing together as a team.

According to Ramirez, they will be instructing speed, agility, strength and conditioning drills, and the camp will be capped off with a tug-of-war competition.

“It will be a fun environment for the kids to go out and run while getting off the electronics for a bit, all while exercising and having fun doing it,” said Ramirez.

Registration for the spring football season will also be available at the camp. Parents can also email Portisabeltarponsts@gmail.com, visit the Mighty Tarpons Facebook page or call Coach Torres at (956) 299-1450. The deadline is Feb. 1.

“We are trying to get the future athletes ready for Jr. High athletics and beyond in life,” said Ramirez. “We want to try to get them off the streets and encourage them to join organized sports.”

Ramirez says that the Mighty Tarpons are in need of volunteers, including coaches for all positions and age brackets, team moms, somebody to organize a cheer squad and a medical trainer. They also are accepting sponsors and donations as well.

“We are asking for the support of the Tarpon Nation and the community. Everything we do is volunteer,” said Ramirez.

The Mighty Tarpons also need supplies including practice gear, helmets, shoulder pads and uniforms.
