On Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2024, Girl Scout Troop #4155, alongside the Parks and Keep SPI Beautiful Committee, held a heartwarming event at Turtle Park on East Morningside Drive to unveil a brand-new Free Little Library.

The 4 p.m. event brought together local leaders, including South Padre Island City Council members, the SPI Chamber of Commerce, the Parks and Keep SPI Beautiful Committee, and community members.

This Free Little Library, Charter #194858, is part of the global nonprofit initiative encouraging readers to “Take a Book • Share a Book.” The city parks crew installed the box before the event, ensuring it was ready for its grand unveiling. During the ceremony, the attending Girl Scouts supplied the library with donated books from community members, providing a wide range of reading materials for adults and children. They also brought homemade cookies for attendees, adding a sweet touch to the celebration.

The library is fully stocked and open to the public, inviting anyone to take a book without the need to leave one in return, fostering greater access to reading for all. Troop #4155, in partnership with the Parks and Keep SPI Beautiful Committee, will maintain the library and restock it as needed. This unveiling is part of a larger vision, with plans to install more Little Free Libraries in other parks across the city.

Little Free Library, the nonprofit behind the initiative, has inspired over 180,000 book-sharing boxes worldwide, promoting literacy and community engagement. This new addition to Turtle Park helps continue that mission locally, offering a welcoming space for the community to connect through books.
