Plans made for toll Causeway at Port Isabel

At a meeting called here by County Judge O. C. Dancy and members of the county commission Tuesday, plans were set up for ownership and operation by the county of a toll Causeway from Port Isabel to Padre Island. County commissioners had considered such a project several years ago when preliminary surveys were authorized. Tolls from the causeway would be used to retire bonds financing its construction, it was brought out. Included in the plans is the public road from the tip of the causeway on Padre Island, across the island and north along the shoreline for a distance of a little more than four miles.

An advisory committee named to prepare an ownership map, to be used by engineers and survey work is composed of R. B. McLeish, Weslaco, chairman of the Valley Planning Board, Oscar Longnecker, manager of the Port Isabel Chamber of Commerce, and Joe Mock, manager of the Harlingen Chamber of Commerce.
James J. Bowie, Director of the Port Isabel San Benito Navigation District, presided at the hearing which was attended by approximately twenty civic leaders and county officials.
