Tarpons face Gators

On Friday, Nov. 1, the Port Isabel Tarpons will play the La Grulla Gators at home. This will be the last district and regular-season game for both teams.

Except for the 2020 and 2021 seasons, the teams have faced off against each other since RGC La Grulla fielded their first varsity team in 2010. The Tarpons have an 8-2 overall winning record against the Gators,
and, once again, Port Isabel will be the favorite this year.

After their 50-point shutout loss to the Lions, the Gators will have their hands full again, but this time, with the Tarpons’ “Tidal Wave” offense. In the Tarpons’ game against Kingsville, Port Isabel’s quarterback,
Bryan Martinez was a perfect six-for-six for 134 yards and one touchdown [TD] pass.

The Tarpons had a fine day rushing, racking up 261 yards on the ground as they spread the ball between 11 different runners. Running back Luis Ramos led the team with 73 yards on nine carries, followed by
Michael Finona’s 67 yards on eight carries, while Dylan Greens rushed for 45 yards on 11 carries.

Although Kingsville dropped several balls, the Tarpons’ “Seawall Defense” did a good job stopping the Brahmas offense, holding them to 246 total yards (167 passing, 79 rushing).

The Tarpons defense should do even better this game considering the Gators have only scored an average of 6.7 points per game.

In other week eight action, La Feria beat La Grulla 50-0, Sinton beat Cuero 23-18 and Rockport-Fulton beat Ingleside 49-14.

Projected order of playoff seeding: 16-4A Div 2: 1. Port Isabel, 2. La Feria, 3. Kingsville, 4. La Grulla; 15-4A Div 2: 1. Sinton, 2. Cuero, 3. Rockport-Fulton, 4. Ingleside. Therefore projecting, no.1 Port Isabel vs
no. 4 Ingleside in the Bi-district round.
