Port Isabel’s Annual Shrimp Cook-Off will take place on Saturday, Nov. 2 at the Sutherlands parking lot from 11 a.m.-5 p.m.
Mary Gonzalez, Director of the Port Isabel Chamber of Commerce, says the cooking competition will see entries from many talented shrimp enthusiasts across professional and amateur teams, each bringing their own unique spin on the versatile shellfish. A culinary team from Port Isabel Early College High School is also slated to compete.
The event will crown a champion according to the judges’ decision and a People’s Choice Award. Guests can vote for their favorite by placing a chip, which they will receive upon entrance to the event, in a box at the front of their booth. The results will be announced at 5 p.m.
Live music and performances from local schools will be played for the public’s enjoyment. There will also be vendor booths selling other foods and general goods. Food vendors will present options including funnel cakes, onion blossoms, fajita tacos, birria tacos, lemonade and more. A cake walk and arts and crafts will be featured at the event.
The Shrimp Cook-Off is one of the largest events the Chamber of Commerce sponsors, according to Gonzalez. It is family- friendly, and everyone is encouraged to attend. The entry fee is $5.
According to their official website, the Port Isabel Chamber of Commerce strives “To promote business, community growth and development of the City of Port Isabel. To advance the general welfare and prosperity of the City of Port Isabel so that its citizens and its business community shall prosper.”
All vendors participating in the event are officially approved by the Chamber. Attendees can expect to see uniquely crafted local souvenirs. The deadline to participate as a vendor in this year’s cook off officially closed on Tuesday, Oct. 29.
