BROWNSVILLE, TX—Cameron County Tax Assessor-Collector (CCTAC), Antonio “Tony” Yzaguirre
Jr., informs property owners that approximately 220,964 tax statements for Tax Year 2024 were mailed to
personal and real estate property owners last week.
“If taxpayers have not received a tax bill, they can pay their taxes online at cameroncountytx.gov/tac or
any of our ten branch offices, countywide,” said Yzaguirre. These tax statements include Cameron County
and all of the other taxing jurisdictions within Cameron County. According to a media statement issued by
the CCTAC’s office, Cameron County is responsible for collecting all property taxes for every taxing body
within the county.
According to the Yzaguirre, there are 205,061 real estate property accounts and 15,749 personal property
accounts that were mailed. The total levy for 2024 on all taxing jurisdictions is $588,703,849.12. As per
Sec. 31.01 (g) of the Texas Property Tax Code, taxpayers are responsible for paying property taxes
regardless of whether a tax statement was mailed or not.
Taxpayers may find property tax balances on the tax assessor collector’s website: cameroncountytx.gov/tac.
According to Yzaguirre, property tax statements are mailed early to allow taxpayers to take advantage of the tax discounts offered by certain districts. “We urge the public to take advantage of tax discounts available to property owners who pay taxes early,” he added.
Payments made in October will receive a 3% discount, a 2% discount in November, and a 1% discount
during December, but only for those districts that offer the discounts. There are no discounts for taxes paid
in January 2025. Taxes for 2024 are due on Jan. 31, 2025, and are delinquent on Feb. 1, 2025, Yzaguirre
said.
According to Yzaguirre, property owners who cannot pay their taxes in full can take advantage of various
payment plan options or make partial payments at any of the ten tax office branch locations.
Taxpayers are encouraged to make arrangements as soon as possible to ensure that taxes are paid in full or
a substantial amount is paid by January 2025 to avoid any added penalties and interest. Internet payments
allow taxpayers to pay taxes by electronic check in the convenience of their home or office over the Internet
24 hours a day, seven days a week, by logging onto cameroncountytx.gov/tac.
A $1 fee is charged for any payment made for $5,000 or less and a $3 fee for any payment made over
$5,000.01 (electronic checks only). This method allows taxpayers to skip the tax office line and avoid
paying postage or credit card fees. However, the taxpayer must ensure all accounts are included and banking
information is correct to avoid additional fees. A 3% fee is added to all credit and debit card transactions.
Partial payments allow taxpayers to visit a tax office and pay taxes in several payments.
Quarterly payments allow taxpayers over 65 years of age or disabled to pay taxes in quarterly payments
without penalty and accruing interest, per Texas Property Tax Code Sec. 31.031.
A tax payment agreement is where a taxpayer enters one of the CCTAC’s offices and signs a payment
agreement to pay taxes by Texas Property Tax Code Sec. 33.02.
Mail-in payments are mailed payments for the total amount of the property taxes.
Over-the-counter payments occur when taxes are paid using a check, cash or credit card at any tax office
location and any Lone Star National Bank in Cameron County. There is a 3% fee on all credit card transactions. VISA, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express are accepted. Night drop boxes are located at each drive-thru lane.
As part of the Consolidated Tax Collections, the CCTAC office has opened a five-lane drive-thru location
in San Benito, 199 S. Sam Houston Blvd., and a six-lane drive-thru located at 300 E. Van Buren St. in
Harlingen. All taxpayers can use the new sites countywide to pay current and delinquent taxes. The existing
Los Fresnos tax office also has drive-thru lanes where clerks can assist taxpayers. Yzaguirre said this will
alleviate congestion at the Harlingen tax office on Wilson Road. “All these improvements are part of the
overall tax collection process, countywide,” Yzaguirre explained.
The advantages of the 100% consolidation are that Cameron County taxpayers can now pay property taxes
for every district in the county at any of the ten locations countywide, or they can pay their property taxes at
any of the seven-county depositing Lone Star National Bank locations countywide.
“We cannot place an exact dollar value on convenience; however, allowing taxpayers to pay all property
taxes (current or delinquent) at one centralized location saves time and makes it easier for citizens to pay
their taxes,” Yzaguirre said.
