Republicans make election strides

BROWNSVILLE, TX—Republicans dominated several key nationwide, statewide and local races during the Nov. 5 General Election.

Cameron County Election Office results favored Democrat candidate Colin Allred with 50.93% of the vote, but Republican Ted Cruz won his bid for re-election as State Senator with 53.2% of the votes, according to
the Texas Secretary of State’s website.

“I want to thank every Texan across our great state, who has stood with us in this fight,” said Cruz in his acceptance speech. He congratulated Allred on a “hard-fought campaign.”

Countywide, Democratic Incumbent Vicente Gonzalez, US Representative, District 34, garnered 50.22% of the vote. This was a narrow margin against Republican Mayra Flores, who garnered 49.78% for the county
vote. Districtwide, Gonzalez took 51.3% percent of the vote to Flores’ 48.7%.

The Cameron County results favored Democrat Incumbent Morgan LaMantia for Texas District 27 with 52.33% of the tally, but Republican challenger Adam Hinojosa won the overall vote count with 49.39%.
LaMantia initially took office in 2022.

Oscar Longoria, Incumbent Democratic State Representative for District 35, ran unopposed, while Republican Jamie Lopez of San Benito retained her seat as State Representative for District 37 with 55.89 % of the vote against Democratic Challenger Juan Gracia. Democrat Erin Elizabeth Gamez for District 38 also ran unopposed.

The Chief Justice for the 13th Court of Appeals district is Democrat Gina Benavides with 50.67% of the vote. She will replace Dori Contreas. Pl. 2 for the 13th Court of Appeals District is Democrat Nora Longoria,
who will continue her time in the seat. Pl. 4 is Democrat Joe Martinez with 52.65%. Pl. 5 is republican Jon West with 50.53%, replacing Benavides.

The District Judge for the 138 Judicial districts is Democrat Gabriela “Gabby” Garcia, 404 Judicial District is Democrat Ricardo M. Adobbati, 444 Judicial District is David A. Sanchez, and 445 is Democrat Gloria M.
Rincones. All of these candidates ran unopposed. Garcia, Adobati and Sanchez are continuing their time as judges.

County Court at Law 5 Democrat Estela Chaves Vasquez, Probate Court 1 Democrat Sheila Garcia Bence and Cameron County District Attorney, Democrat Luis V. Saenz, all ran unopposed.

The new Cameron County Sheriff is Democrat Manuel “Manny” Trevino with 57.94% of vote. Trevino is replacing Eric Garza. Garza congratulated Garza in a Facebook post, stating “ Congratulations to Sheriff-Elect Manuel “Manny” Treviño. We will be reaching out to him in the next couple of days to begin the transition for the safety and security of Cameron County.”

The County’s new Tax Assessor-Collector is Democrat Eddie Garcia with 53.97%. On Garcia’s official website, he promises the public a “high-level confidence that their hard-earned Tax Dollars are being handled with the utmost integrity.”

Cameron County Commissioner for Pct. 1, Democrat Sofia C. Benavides garnered 57.98% of the vote to retain her post while, Pct. 3 Democratic Incumbent David A. Garza ran unopposed. Pct. 2, Pl. 2 Democrat Linda Salazar ran unopposed for Justice of the Peace. Pct. 5, Pl. 5 Republican JP Chuck Vieh won with 51.48% and Pl. 3 is Republican Alejandro “Alex” Torres won with 51.75%.

Constable Pct. 1 is Republican Incumbent Norman Esquivel Jr. with 58.36% whereas Democrat Abelardo “Abel” Gomez won his race, and. Pct. 3 Constable, Democratic Incumbent Adrian Gonzalez beat his opponent
with 53.02%. Pct. 4 and 5 Incumbents are Democrats Merced Burnias Jr. and Eddie Soils, respectively. Gomez, Burnias and Soils were unopposed.
