According to Cameron County Judge Eddie Trevino, multiple county beach accesses were closed over Veterans Day weekend due to the effects of Tropical Storm Rafael.

Boca Chia Beach, Beach Access Number Three, Beach Access Number Four, Beach Access Number Five/E.K. Atwood Park and Beach Access Number Six were all closed from 8:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 9 to 2:30
p.m. Sunday, Nov. 10 “for the protection and safety of the public considering Tropical Storm Rafael and the undriveable land conditions,” according to a press release from the Trevino’s office. However, Isla Blanca
Park and Andy Bowie County Park remained open.

“…We ask that all individuals be cautious when visiting our beaches and heed the advice of authorities patrolling our beaches. In addition, be aware of the Flag Advisory System which notes the current surf
conditions,” stated the release.

According to the US National Weather Service Brownsville/Rio Grande Valley, just after sunrise on Saturday, a long-period swell from Rafael created dangerous surf conditions and pushed waves into the dunes.
Those conditions repeated that following evening and into Sunday morning.

As of Friday, Nov. 8, Tropical Storm Rafael was located 460 miles east of South Padre Island and was moving west at five miles per hour, according to the weather service. Its maximum winds were clocked at 70
miles per hour.

The National Hurricane Center in Miami Florida first reported that Tropical Storm Rafael was passing southwest of Jamaica on Tuesday, Nov. 5.
