On Saturday, Nov. 9, a fire of unknown origin engulfed an abandoned motorhome on Adams Avenue in Laguna Heights, according to Port Isabel Fire Marshall John Sandoval. Sandoval says the Port Isabel Fire Department [PIFD] was dispatched at 4:55 p.m. He estimates that the fire started at approximately 4:30 p.m., as the fire was fully involved by the time they arrived.
Due to the lack of a water source in the area, the PIFD requested mutual aid from neighboring fire departments in Laguna Vista and South Padre Island.
“We are grateful to South Padre and Laguna Vista for responding to the call as well and assisting with the fire,” said Sandoval.
According to Sandoval, the fire was extinguished within an hour of arrival.
Sandoval says the motorhome was vacant and a nearby residence was evacuated. Nobody was inside the motorhome at the time and no injuries were sustained while extinguishing the fire. The evacuated citizens were able to quickly return to their home once the fire was fully extinguished.
Although the origin of the fire is undetermined, according to Sandoval, the lack of insurance claim on the structure negates the need for further investigation.
Sandoval encourages fire safety all year round, but especially during the holiday season. Holiday lights, increased cooking in the kitchen, the use of space heaters during cold weather are all factors of the holiday uptick of house fires, according to Sandoval.
