This past Friday, Dec. 13, the 4A Port Isabel Lady Tarpons hosted the 6A Los Fresnos Lady Falcons in a non-district matchup.
The Lady Tarpons got off to a good start in the game as Emily Burrage scored the first points on a ‘give-and-go’ play with Nadia Flaig. With less than five minutes to go in the first quarter, Burrage struck again – this
time with a three from the corner as the Lady Tarpons now led 7-2.
It became apparent early in the game that Port Isabel was working on getting the ball to their center, Flaig, down in the paint. With 3:22 left in the first, Halle Mata found herself surrounded by Lady Falcon players, but she managed to find Flaig who then proceeded to sink her shot to give PI an 11-4 lead.
A combination of PI turnovers and Los Fresnos hitting some threes led to the Lady Falcons taking a 15-11 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Los Fresnos carried their momentum into the second quarter. A basket by PI’s Burrage finally snapped a 15-0 scoring run by the Lady Falcons as Los Fresnos now led 19-13. The Lady Tarpons continued to struggle
with their shots and turnovers as Los Fresnos outscored them 19-5 the rest of the quarter and built a 38-18 lead at halftime.
As the second half resumed, Los Fresnos kept the Lady Tarpons at bay as they closed out the third quarter with a 53-26 lead. Los Fresnos maintained their lead, outscoring the Lady Tarpons 17-9 in the fourth quarter,
and ultimately winning the game 70-35.
The Lady Tarpons will be off for the holidays and will resume games on Jan. 3, 2025, with a home game versus La Feria at 7:30 p.m.
