MOMENTS IN TIME: Ten story condominium plans announced

Steve Hathcock has an extensive background in historical preservation and writing focused on South Texas. He has served as Chairman of the Cameron County Historical Commission for two terms and Vice Chair for two terms, having been a member since 2004.  He is also a founding member of the Historical Foundation of South Padre Island and will serve an active role in presenting the history of South Padre Island in the foundation’s new museum which will open sometime in late spring/early summer 2025. Moments in Time is a collection of recovered newspaper briefs and other publications, compiled by Hathcock, offering a look back at the history of the Rio Grande Valley.

Coast Guard Is New Name For Lifesavers

The United States Lifesaving Service is no more. The name of the service has been changed to the United States Coast Guard by a recent Act of Congress, An official notification of this change was received in Brownsville today from James F. Phillips at Galveston, Superintendent of the Ninth Coast Guard District. (Brownsville Daily Herald, Jan. 30, 1915.)

Ten story condominium plans announced

Announcement was made this week that a $1,500,000 condominium apartment complex will be constructed on South Padre Island and should be ready for occupancy by this time next year.

The 10-story structure will be the tallest on the Island, according to George E Dupree, vice president of the Zodiac Corporation, builders of the project. To be known as the “Aquarius,” the complex will be located north of the Miramar with a good view of both the Gulf and the Bay. It will be separated from the beach by a landscaped area and its own swimming pool. There will be sixty-four apartments, each with its own balcony, and all maintenance will be under supervision of a resident manager. Space also will be provided for maids. Construction is expected to start within three months. (Port Isabel Press. Jan. 20, 1972.)
