The South Texas Ecotourism Center will hold a spring break camp for young nature enthusiasts who want to learn more about the environment in a fun way.

According to Mathew Michelle, a STEC employee, the camp will span across four days, March 10-13 from 9 a.m.- 12 noon each day.

Each of the four days will be themed around one of the different ecosystems seen at the center. The camp will feature activities like nature expeditions, scavenger hunts, arts and crafts, and more. According to the Michelle, there will be a special guest from Texas Parks and Wildlife who will deliver a presentation and demonstration to the children on March 11.

The camp will offer an enriching, educational and hands-on experience for attendees. “More than anything else, this is going to be educational. [We’re] trying to teach the kids about nature in general,” said Michelle.
Michelle will be one of the chaperones guiding and monitoring the children throughout the program, and there should be at least two chaperones “at any given moment” to further assist. There will be a snack time each day at 11 p.m. The center will provide prepackaged snacks.

Children ages 7-11 can take part in the camp. They must be of age on the first day of camp. There is an entry fee of $50 per child. Payment must be made in person at the STEC office. When registering for camp, parents or guardians must disclose any allergies, physical or learning disabilities, and medications the child may have.
STEC advises parents and guardians to send their children with sunscreen already applied and bug spray. According to their registration document for the camp, STEC often uses water on hot days during activities, so it is advised to pack an extra change of clothes before going to the camp.

Parents and guardians may accompany their child to the camp, but they must also write down at least two people who can pick up their child.

STEC is dedicated to various projects promoting the biodiversity of nature in the lower Laguna Madre. For more information, visit their listing on the Cameron County website or call (956) 772-0219.
